crit essay 2
Who’s Worthy of the Position?
Democracy is one word that would best describe Philippine Elections. The power of the people to choose who is rightful and worthy for the positions dozens of candidates are fighting for. Sure democracy is being implemented in elections but media greatly affects the voting decisions of the people. How does the Media do that? Why are people so reliant on media?
Two theories in the Metaphor of the Conduit may help us answer those questions. First is the Hypodermic Needle Effect Theory. It states that the media “injects” certain information to the passive audience so the people would accept the information thus, the media would get the desired response from them. The slogans and catch-phrases of the candidates are specially made to mold the minds of the voters and make the voters believe that this certain candidate would fit the standards of the people. Some favorite attachments next to their names are makabayan, makamasa, and maka-Diyos. These names and some slogans which are inject to the people have implied information such as “this candidate is maka-Diyos. He has a set of morals therefore you should vote for him” and “this candidate is maka-Bayan. He thinks of the Bayan first before anything else therefore you should vote for him”. The people’s thinking is shaped into uniformity but how would you explain the candidates who lose? Let’s take candidates maka-Diyos and maka-bayan for example. When the election results are out, candidate maka-Diyos won to candidate maka-bayan. Well everyone got those perceptions but not everyone has being “maka-bayan” in their standards and criteria. This theory also gives support on why candidates who sprinkle TV and movie stars on their campaign paraphernalia win. Many people idolize these stars and so they believe in what their idols say about the candidate.
Second is the Uses and Gratifications Approach. The theory explains the functions and uses of the media. It aims to explain how mass communication satisfy the people needs, to find the essential reasons why people use media and to spot both the positive and the negative effects or consequences on the people who use the media. Voters tend to rely on media because it’s the easiest way to gather source. Again, let’s take candidate maka-Diyos for example. Voter 1 and 2 wants to check whether the flyers and TV ads are telling the truth. Voter 1 rushes to his newspaper archive and looks for certain articles which may prove or disprove the claims. Voter 2 on the other hand went to the office of the BIR to check on the transactions of the certain candidate. Voter 1 saw good articles about candidate maka-Diyos and voter 2 saw that the candidate’s transactions are clean. So they both assumed that candidate maka-Diyos is indeed maka-Diyos. The consequence of this discovery is that they will most probably vote for candidate maka-Diyos than maka-bayan.
To sum it all up, it’s the media’s job to propagate messages. These messages which are given by the mass media is reliable enough because they get their information from first hand sources. The people then have the opportunity to accept and integrate the messages that the media sends. People have different norms, therefore; a universal criteria on who deserves to win in the elections cannot be made.

Broadcast Media - Only Rizal COULD Live Without it
According to an online encyclopedia, broadcasting is simply, the distribution of audio and/or video signals which transmit programs to an audience.
There's a big difference between Mass media and Broadcast media. Mass media comprises of all means of mass communication while broadcast media uses electronic communication networks. Flyers and print ads are under mass media but not under broadcast media because there must be an electronic device as means of communication to the masses.
Before the time of radios, televisions and the like, it is easy for them to set up meetings even without these devises since their world was small and the people they know are the people who live near them. People lived in "isolation", limiting their connections only to people inside or near their towns. Barrios for example know that there will be a meeting through a town bell or a Batingaw, that when rung, people who live in the barrio could hear it. Broadcast media is similar to that batingaw.
Nowadays, people are more adventurous. We tend to seek more opportunities outside our shells. The need to reach other people outside our "barrios" triggered the start of broadcast media. Public meetings could be held, delayed, moved or re-scheduled in a snap. Even people living far away could could be updated about what's happening wherever through television sets, radios, and the internet. People Power or EDSA couldn't have been possible without the radio. ABS-CBN's TFC channel lets pinoys abroad tune in to the local shows even outside our country.
The internet isn't playing a really BIG role on broadcast media compared to the television YET but it is slowly becoming an essential ingredient. The internet is popular for videos but LIVE coverages aren't very popular yet here in the Philippines due to poor connections which keeps us impatient due to the constant buffering. And not all of the people in our country own a computer but almost all of us own a television set in our homes. Because of this, we would still rely on the television.

Information Revolution
But the information revolution that really caught my attention is the fifth revolution, the toolshed home.
During this time the people were really depressed due to unemployment and famine. So their impulse is to find ways in entertaining themselves. But since they are too poor to afford entertainment, they demanded for "free" entertainment. Because of this, the radio is now more accessible in every home. People didn't have to spend a lot for transportation and watching the sort films outside of their house because they could just buy a radio and listen to it without leaving the house.
The television also first appeared in this revolution which is probably the most influential form of mass media. Almost every home in the Philippines owns at least one TV. Without the television, our entertainment cravings won't be satisfied. It's true that the radio could also quench our thirst for entertainment through music and talk shows but the television could do it faster because it wouldn't only satisfy our ears but also our sight. More people could be easily entertained by the TV than the radio.
If it weren't for the fifth information revolution, we might still be needing to go out of our homes just to watch our favorite TV shows.
